How the government could really help SMEs

The Chancellor is missing a free opportunity to inject UK businesses with badly needed credit and to give a long-term boost to our entrepreneurism - both of which will help us out of his hole.

The government should permanently and immediately increase its payment terms on VAT and payroll taxes for small & mid-sized businesses.

The effect is huge - adding just six months would boost Conosco's working capital by 10% of annual turnover, more than doubling it. I would give longer to the smallest companies whose finances tend to be more fragile.

This could also transform the financing of new business startups, at a time when they are a way back to employment and when more and more of the world is competing with us.

Best of all, the move wouldn't cost much compared to his other measures, doesn't remove moral hazard and doesn't need any new mechanisms.

Great reception last night for the World & Olympic Champions, just back from Beijing with huge smiles and three gold medals, backed by rings of jade - a very elegant Chinese touch.

We've been proud to play a small part in supporting them - and hope to continue if they take aim at London 2012 (the Yngling class might be dropped in favour of match racing, we hear).

The fabulous Yngling Girls - Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson - have won gold in their class of keelboats at the Beijing Olympics. Even with their talent, dedication and single-minded focus it's an awesome achievement - we salute you!

Conosco have supported the team since the last Olympics - when the Sarahs also won the Yngling gold.

The Yngling girls have successfully defended their world championship in the Yngling sailing class - yet again without needing to sail the last race.

(Conosco have been supporting the Yngling Girls since they started their campaign to defend their Athens 2004 Olympic gold medal at Beijing 2008.)

The Yngling Girls, sponsored by Conosco, have continued their domination of the Yngling class of sailing boats by winning the 2007 Olympic Test Event in Qingdao and rising to number 1 in the world ranking.

Having won the Yngling world championships in July, this result also secured them the sole Yngling place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics - a tremendous achievement!

This is a key stepping stone to winning the British nomination for the Beijing Olympics next year - only one Yngling boat can go and the girls have strong competition from their former helm, with whom they won gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Conosco have recently agreed to sponsor the 'Yngling Girls' (www.ynglinggirls.com) in the form of free IT support and consultancy. The girls won a gold medal for sailing at the last Olympics and we look forward to them bringing back the gold from Beijing in 2008.

Conosco scraps 12 month contracts

Conosco has decided to abolish 12 month minimum support contracts in favour of a much more flexible contract for our customers. We strongly believe in what we do and what better way to demonstrate this than not locking our customers in for a defined period of time?
